Back to Innertee

Posted by: Miles In: Community

Well its pretty obvious I haven’t had time to keep up with things on the metrics side. We’ve been swamped at Small World Labs (this is good!) and I’m going to consolidate  and hopefully get back to blogging over at my old home > www.innertee.com.

Just wanted to post some of the recaps and Peter Kim’s post has some good links. You can see the real time questions we got by searching for the #swl on twitter. Thanks to everyone who came and feel free to contact me with more questions.

Peter also talked to KXAN (local NBC) about SXSW before the panel.

See you around SXSW!

Just got word that I’ll be on a panel at SXSW Interactive with Peter Kim, hosted by our CEO Michael Wilson called ‘How to Sell social media to the man?’ - great topic and something we’ve dealt with a lot. Sam’s also posted a bit of info on the panel and what we’ll be covered. If you have any questions or ideas feel free to post them up!

Back at it!

Wow - its been over a month since my last post. December & January have flown by but I shold be back to posting regularly now.

Over the Holidays Kate over at Social Abacus put together a great post & pdf on The Future of Measurement. Its an easy read and well worth it to get an idea of what poeple will be looking at going into 2009.

Good post yesterday by the folks over at Beeline Labs about Patrick O’Keefe’s book Managing Online Forums that recaps some of the recommendations he makes for creating community guidelines.

These are common sense recommendations but should be applied to your specific needs and goals. It also required you to ensure that the appropriate amount of time will be spend from a community management perspective making sure content & comments are within the guidelines - you have to maintain the community integrity.

That being said, posting the ‘playground rules’ helps the community grow and you should find that you are still spending the majority of time encouraging people to participate than trying to keep on top of the bullies. Even to the point of creating some engagement guidelines internally for your organization to help people understand how to engage on the community. Its a lot easier to tell people what not to do but much better to encourage people to do things that drive the community forward even if it takes a bit more effort.

A great new resource created by the CommunityGuy Jake McKee is the 90-9-1.com site. Its an easy to understand explanation of the 90-9-1 rule and gives a few real world examples. It also has a number of great links which I’ve shared below that provide a great overview of the rule and the concept of 1% rule your top influencers.

Great work Jake!

Social networking stats

Another quality post today from the Web Strategy Blog by Jeremiah on Social Networks Site Usage: Visitors, Members, Page Views, and Engagement by the Numbers in 2008

I’ve preached some on the diminishing value of pageviews and visitors as stand alone metrics but the data here is interesting and provides some great industry insight from a growth standpoint.

The Austin Social Media Club is set for their November meeting here at Small World Labs and we’re excited to have them. The topic for this month’s meeting is Women Under 30 Kicking Ass in Social Media - pretty sweet.

The event is free but be sure to RSVP so there’s enough food to go around. See you there!
